Five people reportedly were injured Monday afternoon at the Kalahari Resorts in Erie County’s Huron Township when ventilation ducts apparently detached and fell from the ceiling of the waterpark area.

The extent of the injuries was unknown. Fire and rescue units reportedly took some of the injured people, believed to be resort customers, to nearby Firelands Regional Medical Center. A hospital spokesman said she had no information regarding the incident.

A customer at the waterpark posted photos Monday to social media showing the fallen duct work. Some sections were in a nearby pool and another large section was partially in a pool and also on the pool’s concrete apron. In the photo, a person can be seen lying flat on the concrete while attended to by responders.

The county sheriff’s office was investigating the incident, which occurred shortly after 1 p.m.

Samantha Flynn, a Kalahari spokesman, refused to provide information about the incident but issued an initial statement that said more details would be forthcoming once they are available.

“We are aware of the situation and take the safety and security of our guests very seriously. We are working closely with our internal teams and the proper authorities to gather details on what happened and will share an updated statement when we have confirmed all the facts,” the statement read.

A dispatcher at the sheriff’s office said the agency was aware of the incident, but no information was immediately available.
