Parishioners at several churches under the Diocese of Toledo are soon to see new pastoral leadership. A series of clergy appointments and transfers announced by Bishop Daniel Thomas are set to go into effect July 2.

The diocese undergoes these types of personnel shifts each year, spokesman Kelly Donaghy said. Pastors are appointed as the heads of churches for six-year terms, which can be renewed once, meaning that the longest a pastor typically stays with a parish is 12 years.

Parochial vicars, also known as associate pastors, typically serve a parish for three years, Ms. Donaghy said. These positions are generally held by more recently ordained priests who are gaining experience toward an eventual appointment as a pastor.

The three men who were ordained to the priesthood at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral on May 26 each received appointments as parochial vicars: Father Kyle Gase to Saint Michael the Archangel Parish in Findlay; Father Scott Perry to Saint John the Evangelist Parish in Delphos, Saint John the Baptist Parish in Landeck, and Saint Patrick Parish in Spencerville; and Father Andrew Wellman to Saint Paul the Apostle Parish in Norwalk.

This year’s round of appointments and transfers also includes two retirements. Mgsr. Dennis Metzger, most recently of Saint Joseph Parish in Sylvania, and Father James Sanford, most recently of Saint Patrick of Heatherdowns Parish in Toledo, are each being granted “senior status,” according to the diocese statement released late last month.

The Diocese of Toledo encompasses 123 parishes in 19 counties.
