Sometimes fishermen catch a little more than they bargain for. Such was the case when 5-year-old Frank Hickman went fishing with his 8-year-old cousin, Jason Hickman, on Aug. 16, 1982. The pair thought their line was caught on the bottom of Silver Lake while fishing from the walking bridge at Side Cut Metropark. But after a few tugs, they discovered something much more exciting. Frank had landed a 32-pound snapping turtle. Frank’s father, Brad, had to help retrieve the reptile from the water. In this photo taken the next day by Blade photographer Dave Cron, Frank, at left, and Jason apparently have been told the news that the snapping turtle was not going to be their pet. After much cajoling, Mr. Hickman persuaded his son that the turtle was too big for their family bathtub and they turned it loose in the Ottawa River, near their home.
