Monday Memories: Honoring a civil rights leader Today is a federal holiday, commemorating the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. This Blade photograph by Luke Black was taken Jan. 18, 1983, as Toledoans marched in honor of the slain civil rights leader. The procession route was from Lo Salem Missionary Baptist Church on Vance Street to the Martin Luther King Center on Nebraska Avenue. The march was preceded by a memorial service at the church, featuring a speech by Toledo Municipal Judge Charles Doneghy, and followed with a dinner for the marchers when they reached the center. PHOTO GALLERY: Pictures of the Week, January 9-15, 2017 Mr. King was born Jan. 19, 1929. He was assassinated April 4, 1968, while on a civil rights mission in Memphis. But his dream of achieving racial equality and an integrated society continues today.
