  • Toledo firefighters responded to a South Toledo house fire Monday.

Crews arrived at a home in the 500 block of Prouty Avenue at about 7:40 a.m. Monday, where heavy flames had been reported.

The home was occupied by one woman, who was evaluated on scene and released. She was not injured, Toledo Fire Department spokesman Pvt. Sterling Rahe said.

The home is owned by Sherrill Adkins, according to the Lucas County Auditor’s Real Estate records.

Firefighters believe the blaze started in the resident’s lift chair, but they’re still investigating, Private Rahe said. It was determined to be accidental.

Initial reports indicate there was about $50,000 worth of damage done to the structure and contents, the spokesman said.

Neighbors stood outside, watching firefighters battle through the thick smoke and tear down parts of the charred roof.

Vivian Ramos, who lives across the street from the woman, had tears in her eyes. She looked out the window and saw the flashing light of the fire trucks.

Ms. Ramos said she tries to help her neighbor with daily tasks.

“I’ve always been worried about her — this happening — she lives alone now,” Ms. Ramos said. “Here I am, trying to take care of her and this happens, and I wasn’t there when she needed me.”

The American Red Cross is assisting the homeowner, Private Rahe said.
