Delta's Mattimore, Elmwood's Shanks also receive state honors

  • Savanah Richards, who helped the Liberty-Benton girls basketball team to a 21-1 overall regular-season record and an 11-0 championship season in the Blanchard Valley Conference, was named Monday to the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association Division III All-Ohio first team.

    The 5-foot-8 junior point guard averaged 16.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 5.7 assists for the Eagles, who were ranked seventh in the final Associated Press state poll and later advanced to a D-III regional semifinal before finishing 25-2.

    Richards was the BVC player of the year.

    Selected to the All-Ohio second team in Division III was Maddie Mattimore, a 5-6 senior guard from Delta, who led the Panthers to a 21-1 regular-season record, and to a 7-0 championship season in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League.

    Mattimore averaged 19.0 points and 4.5 rebound for Delta, which finished 23-2 with a loss in a district semifinal. She was the Northwest Ohio Athletic League’s player of the year.

    Elmwood senior Zoe Shank was picked to the third team in D-III after averaging 19.8 points and 8.5 rebounds for the 15-7 Royals, who were co-champions in the Northern Buckeye Conference at 12-2.

    Shank, a 5-11 center, was a two-time NBC player of the year.
