To the editor: Police needs body cameras

Toledo Police Officer Michelle Sterling wears a body camera.
It has been several weeks since the Toledo Police Department’s body cameras were removed and sent back to the manufacturer because of technical glitches. They are supposed to be working on a replacement camera, but have not set a date when that is expected to happen. A more proactive approach would have been to keep our current cameras rolling and conduct trials on a new body camera system.
The body cameras protect the officers and city from litigation. The camera technology has been embraced by the majority of police departments across our great country. It should not be rocket science to find a suitable replacement body camera for our officers.

Family separation is inhumane
Having lived through the terms of 14 presidents, I have never seen anything as un-American as what President Trump is doing by separating immigrant children from their parents. Believe what you may about the present immigration policies in our country, this is the most inhumane thing that could be done to people, regardless of the country from where they are coming.
Not all immigrants are good people, but the majority of them are simply looking for a better future for themselves and their children, as we all do. Look at your children and think of the heartache of having them taken away from you. So much for the motto, “Give me your tired and poor...”

Time to move on
I agree with the recent letter about the church being God’s house. (June 6, “God’s house is everywhere”). It is sad that St. Anthony Church is gone. It has not been a church for about 13 years. But it was not the only church to close in the area — there was also St. Stanislaus, which was my parish. But time has run out for many of us and our buildings are no longer houses of worship.
Why are these people suddenly concerned about a building that has been vacant for so long and probably suffered deterioration on the inside? The time to act was long before Bishop Thomas was appointed to the Diocese of Toledo. Would your paper ever insult any other bishop as your editorial did? (June 7, “Bishop Tough Guy”).
What would Jesus do? Jesus did not always please everyone.
