Hens lose grasp of 3-run lead to Bisons

The Mud Hens were unable to hold on to an early three-run lead, falling to the Buffalo Bisons 5-4 in an International League game on Friday at Coca-Cola Field.

What happened: Jacob Robson and Dawel Lugo each went 3-for-5 with three singles and a run scored at the top of Toledo’s batting order. Chad Huffman went 2-for-4 with a two-run double, while Jason Krizan went 1-for-3 with an RBI single, a walk, and a run scored.

Ryan Carpenter struck out six in 5⅔ innings of work, but took the loss after surrendering five earned runs on eight hits and four walks.

The Mud Hens scored first when Krizan grounded a two-out single into right to drive in Robson in the first inning.

The Bisons’ Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning.

Toledo scored three runs in the third on three hits. Lugo singled and scored when Mikie Mahtook hit a two-out double. After Krizan walked, Huffman drove in both runners with a double to make it 4-1.

Game MVP: Huffman went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs for the Hens.

Comings and goings: On Thursday, right-handed pitcher Nick Tepesch was assigned to Toledo. He was acquired by the Detroit Tigers in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this week. ... Former Toledo right-hander Jacob Turner was designated for assignment by the Tigers after the team signed former Cleveland Indians reliever Zach McAllister.

Make a note of it: Toledo and Buffalo are completing the season series this weekend. The Mud Hens won two of three when the teams met June 5-7 in Toledo. ... Buffalo third baseman Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., the son of the recently inducted Baseball Hall of Famer, entered hitting .462 in nine games for the Bisons. He is ranked the top prospect in all of baseball by MLBPipeline.com. ... Toledo entered without a home run since Aug. 2. ... Krizan’s first-inning RBI single broke an 0-for-11 skid.

A look ahead: The Mud Hens play in Buffalo in the second game of a three-game set on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Toledo will send lefty Tyler Alexander (2-5, 4.59 ERA) to the mound, while Buffalo will start right-hander Brandon Cumpton (2-1, 4.98 ERA).
