UT President Gaber meets with Ohio delegation in DC

University of Toledo President Sharon Gaber met with members of Toledo’s Washington delegation Tuesday and Wednesday.

The trip was one that UT’s president intends to make every semester, said Meghan Cunningham, a university spokesman. Ms. Gaber met Wednesday with U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio) and staff of U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R., Ohio), and was expected to meet with U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo). She visited Tuesday with U.S. Rep. Bob Latta (R., Bowling Green).

One of the issues discussed was Ms. Gaber’s concern about the potential impact of the tax bill now pending in Congress on the university, Ms. Cunningham said.

In a letter to Miss Kaptur in November, Ms. Gaber warned that the Republican tax-reform bill would make college less affordable for students and take away incentives to donate to colleges and universities.

The bill passed the U.S. Senate on Saturday along party lines by 51-49, with Senator Brown voting no and Senator Portman voting yes. A different bill passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the two houses’ reconciliation of their bills is pending.

Mr. Latta voted in favor of the House bill Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and said the House version modernizes the tax code and provides “needed tax relief for middle class families.”

Miss Kaptur voted against the bill, which she said was being pushed through without enough discussion.
