Big Blue for Butler: Whitmer DL picks Kentucky

    • One of northwestern Ohio’s most sought-after recruits has a target destination.

    Whitmer defensive lineman Cavon Butler announced Friday that he has verbally committed to the University of Kentucky for football.

    The rising senior had offers from a several major programs, including Alabama, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh, and from local Group of Five programs that included Toledo, Cincinnati, and Ohio.

    He announced his decision in a tweet thanking Kentucky coach Mark Stoops and recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow for the opportunity.

    “I want to than coach Stoops, coach Marrow and the whole Kentucky organization for welcoming me into the wildcat family,” Butler wrote. “[I] am truly blessed and honored to say that I am committed to the University of Kentucky.”

    Rated a three-star player by 247Sports’ composite rankings, the 6-foot-2, 285-pound Butler drew the attention of a number of college football programs with a standout junior season.

    Alabama came into the picture and offered a scholarship, but Butler found his best fit at UK, which offered in June of this year. Butler is the only defensive tackle currently committed in the Wildcats’ class of 2019.

    The Wildcats currently have the No. 40 recruiting class in the Football Bowl Subdivision, according to 247. 

    The first opportunity for rising seniors to sign a national letter of intent will come in December.
